How to Get Rid of Dark Underarms Naturally

A few days ago a friend who knows my fondness for DIY beauty asked me how to get rid of dark underarms naturally. I instantly said virgin coconut oil (her reaction was priceless). Though a powerful moisturizer for some people its scent could break them out of deep sleep! You can easily get rid of dark underarms using simple home remedies that are safe, effective, natural and affordable.

Dark coloration of the skin in the underarms region is usually not a medical condition /disease.  I would think of dark underarms as the skin’s response to exposure to certain elements.

Some of the main causes of dark underarms are shaving, regular use of hair removing creams, excessive sweating, accumulation of dead skin cells, use of alcohol-based deodorants and antiperspirants.

Here are 4 ways to get rid of dark underarms naturally:

 1) Coconut Oil

My favourite option to get rid of dark underarms.  Coconut oil contains vitamin E that can help lighten the underarms. It also works as an effective natural deodorant (yes! you read right deodorant).

What to do:

  •  Massage the dark underarms with coconut oil.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes.
  • Wash it off with mild soap/wash and lukewarm water.
  • Repeat twice daily until you achieve the desired results.

2) Potato

Acidic (mild) property present in potatoes is a great natural bleaching agent.  It will not cause skin irritation.

What to do:

  • Simply rub a slice of potato on your underarms.

  • I prefer to grate the potato and apply the juice to the underarms allow it to dry for 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Use either of the two ways twice daily for faster results.

 3) Lemon

Lemons are a natural bleach, powerful antibacterial and antiseptic agent.

What to do:

  • Rub a lemon wedge on the underarm for a few minutes. Leave the juice on your skin for 10 minutes and make sure to wash the area thoroughly.
  • For exfoliation you can sprinkle a little sugar on the lemon wedge and use.

Do this 3-4 times a week.

  • Add a little honey, natural yogurt and tumeric in some lemon juice and apply to your underarms.  Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash it off.

Repeat 3-4 times a week.

4) Orange Peel

Orange peels thanks to their skin lightening and exfoliating properties can be used to lighten the skin under your arms.

What to do:

  • Put some orange peels aside to dry out completely in the sun (takes a few days)
  • Grind the dried peels into powder form.
  • Mix 2 teaspoons of powdered orange peels with enough rose water and milk to make a thick paste.
  • Gently scrub your underarms with the paste and leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
  • Wash the area with cold water.

Repeat this process 2-3 times a week.

I love that these are the most ordinary things! They are safe, effective, NATURAL and affordable.
